awkward but awesome

I’m awkward in social situations.  I always have been.  I’m particularly awkward in large groups of women.  Even though I consider myself to be quite girly in a lot of ways, I am not even a little bit domestic in the traditional female sense. I don’t enjoy cooking, scrap booking, photography, or any of those stereotypical female hobbies. I could never be a stay-at-home mom.  I would lose my shit.  (Not hating on stay-at-home moms at all.  I admire that you can do it.  It’s just not me.)

Why am I telling you this? Well I found myself spending time with a group of about six women this weekend, all of whom are fairly domestic minded.  I didn’t have much in common with any of them.  There was a rather heated debate over what’s better: the manual or electric can opener.  I stayed out of the conversation until questioned directly. (I did this by making sure my mouth was always full of food.  Fail.)  My response:  I personally prefer a manual can opener because what about when the zombie apocalypse occurs and there is no electricity? You’ve gotta be prepared.

This response was met with confused stares and an awkward silence.

But when I immediately thereafter texted my response to my bestie, Danielle, she said: That is awesome!

And that is why we are such good friends.
