This morning I was at a hearing with a female client, who happens to be a ballet instructor. Upon hearing her profession, the Trustee, who is an old man, smirked and said, “Oh you must be really flexible.”
This was said on the record, in a room containing about 30 people.
I opened my mouth to go off, but my client looked at me with wide eyes and slightly shook her head. She was so embarrassed, and I was completely furious, but I certainly wasn’t going to do anything to cause her more discomfort. Meanwhile, old white guy was completely oblivious.
And how sad is it that this sort of thing happens so often that my client and I could have an unspoken conversation about it with just a simple glance?
Ugh.
